Take the heart to the sewing machine and sew all the way around, about 1/4″ to 3/8″ from the edge.

After it’s sewn, take a pair of pinking shears

and trim the edges to make them nice and even. The pinking shears also give the edges a nice zigzag finish.

Now you can open the flap on the back and put the goodies inside. Don’t stuff it too full, or the flap won’t close again.

The kid-friendly version

After completing the simple sachets above, you can now hand the hearts off to your kids to decorate. With puffy paints, buttons, ribbons, and glue, your kids can make custom Valentines for their friends or family members. Just take a look at the adorable heart Jo’s daughter made for her Daddy.

The fancy version

If you’ve mastered the basic sachet, there are a few extra steps you can take to make it more elaborate.

First, you can embroider a design or message on the front of the sachet. If you are lucky enough to have access to an electronic embroidery machine (like my new Singer Futura CE-150,

which I love), this is quite easy to do. If not, you can always embroider a design by hand and personalize your sachet however you wish.

Another nice touch to add is a ribbon hanger. To do this, just cut a piece of nice satin satin ribbon about six inches long. Fold the ribbon in half and put the cut ends towards the center of the heart, on the back of the full heart. Hold it in place with your finger, add the two half-hearts just as before, and secure all the pieces in place with a pin. Then sew and trim the heart just as before.

A third way to spice up your sachets is to use a decorative stitch to sew it closed. You can do this by hand, or with one of the decorate stitches available on most sewing machines these days.

These extra touches can really put your sachet over the top!
